Record Drop: Nas - God’s Son (2002)

Review/Comments:

8.75/10

This may be an unpopular take, but this here is my favourite Nas album. Growing up, for as long as I knew about rap & hip hop I knew about Nas and his style. For whatever reason though, it wasn’t until God’s Son hit that my love for Nas really clicked. The first two singles (“I Can” & “Made You Look”) had me hooked, and I borrowed the CD from my buddy cause I had to hear the rest.

Not everything on this album is a hit, but upon a re-listen in 2024 it’s a comfortable no skip for me. I remembered not being into a few songs (such as “Warrior Song”) when I was younger seem to connect for me now.

My favourite song on the album is even a surprise to me - “Thugz Mansion”. If you know me and my tastes, you know I’m not a fan of 2 Pac. I, especially, wasn’t a fan of that early 2000s era of his verses coming out of the vault to finish off tracks with artists still around to do their work. Something about it just felt off to me. Anyways, for whatever reason “Thugz Mansion” hit different. The vocals on the hook were good, the dynamic felt right with Pac & Nas on the verses, and the feel of them just rapping over an acoustic guitar stood out. In an era with so many skilled producers and insane instrumentals it was something perfectly basic and unique.
